Diwali gift hampers: what to send family, clients and teams in the GTA
Velvéa · 6 min read · October 4, 2026
Diwali gifting has its own rhythm. Houses fill with visitors for days, boxes of sweets change hands at every door, and the gifts that do best are the ones that can be opened and passed around a crowded living room. A hamper that suits a quiet birthday is not always the one that suits Diwali.
In 2026, Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, the same day Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas. The date follows the lunar calendar, and some families and temples observe it a day apart. If timing matters, check with the people you are sending to.
Where a hamper fits next to the mithai
We do not make mithai. Kaju katli, barfi and ladoo come from a sweet shop, ideally the one the family already trusts, and no basket replaces that box.
A hamper covers what goes around it. Boxed chocolates have become a Diwali standard in their own right across the GTA, and a well-packed basket of chocolate, biscuits, coffee or tea, and something for the home sits comfortably beside the sweets. It also keeps longer than fresh mithai, which counts for a lot when a household receives six boxes in three days.
What works for Diwali
Think shareable before personal. Diwali is a week of guests, and a basket that can go on the table and be offered round, such as assorted chocolate or gourmet snacks, gets used during the festival. A personal pampering gift tends to wait until it is over. Keep it shelf-stable, too. Kitchens are full and fridges are fuller, so anything that needs refrigeration is a burden that week.
Coffee and tea baskets are a quiet favourite, because they are what gets opened once the guests have gone. And since Diwali is the festival of lights, a candle or a little pampering for the person who has spent a week hosting suits the season. Our spa and wellness baskets work well for a close friend or relative who has done all the cooking.
Settle the dietary question first
Many Diwali households are vegetarian, some strictly, and this is where a well-meant food gift can go wrong. Three things are worth checking:
- Gelatine, the most common catch. It is an animal product, and gummies, marshmallows and some chewy sweets are made with it.
- Eggs, which turn up in some biscuits and baked treats. Plenty of vegetarian families eat them and plenty do not. Jain households generally avoid them, along with a longer list of ingredients.
- Alcohol, which is never in our baskets. Velvéa sells none, so nothing in a basket will put a host in an awkward position.
If you are not sure, ask us what a basket contains before you order. Every basket is packed by hand after the order is placed, so we can tell you exactly what is inside. For a strictly vegetarian or Jain household, a spa or tea-focused basket is often the simplest choice.
When to deliver
The day itself is the worst day to arrive. Families are at the temple or gurdwara, cooking or out visiting, and a basket left on the step on Diwali night can sit there until morning.
| Delivery window (2026) | Why |
|---|---|
| Monday 2 to Friday 6 November | The best window. The gift arrives while the house is preparing and is there to offer guests |
| Saturday 7 November | Fine for one or two local gifts, but expect a busy household |
| Sunday 8 November | Avoid where you can |
| The week after | Acceptable if you missed it, though it reads as a late gift rather than a Diwali gift |
For a single basket in the GTA, same-day or next-day delivery covers you if you leave it late. Anything going outside our local area needs a basket that can be shipped, ordered by the end of October. Fresh flowers and chocolate-heavy baskets are local only. Each product page says so, and checkout will tell you before you pay.
Diwali gifts from a business
For many GTA companies, Diwali now matters as much as December, particularly with clients and teams in Mississauga and Brampton. It has a practical advantage as well: a Diwali gift arrives five weeks before everyone else's year-end basket, and people remember it for that.
- Send it to the home, not the office. Diwali is a family festival, and a shareable basket on a kitchen counter does far more than one on a desk.
- Keep the tier consistent. If some of a team get a Diwali gift, the rest notice. Decide who the gift is for before you decide what it is.
- Only send it to people who celebrate. A December holiday gift can be broad. A Diwali gift is specific, and that is its value.
- Order by mid-October for a multi-address run in the first week of November.
The corporate gifting guide covers the tax treatment of food gifts and sensible budgets, and you can request a corporate quote for a list of any size. For ideas, start with baskets for clients and baskets for employees.
What to write on the card
Every Velvéa gift includes a printed message card. "Happy Diwali" is always right, and one more line of warmth is what people notice.
- "Wishing you and your family a bright and joyful Diwali."
- "Happy Diwali! May the year ahead be full of light, health and good things."
- "Shubh Deepavali to all of you, with love from our family to yours."
- For a client: "Wishing you and your family a happy and prosperous Diwali, and thank you for a wonderful year working together."
If you are writing to a Sikh family, "Happy Bandi Chhor Divas" or a broader "Wishing you a joyful festival of lights" is a kind touch. For more help with wording, see what to write in a gift message.
Most of this comes down to two things: the ingredient list and the delivery date. Get those right and a shareable basket will find its place among the sweets. Our Diwali gift baskets are the obvious place to start, or you can browse all gift baskets.
